Bears Outlast Bruins 2-1

Rain delay and slow start cripples Bruins

Box Score
The BJU Bruins women’s team traveled over six hours for their matchup with the University of Pikeville Bears in Pikeville, Kentucky. Instead of arriving to start the game, the Bruins waited as thunderstorms and rain postponed the match for over an hour and a half before the game would commence. With the rain came sloppy field conditions which affected both teams throughout the match.

As the game began, the the long trip and the wet conditions didn't seem to really bother the Bruins as they came out and played well from the opening kickoff. The Bruins had a few mishaps in not getting good defensive pressure and it played to the Bears advantage as they quickly notched two goals to get ahead of the Bruins. “Good teams won’t hesitate to punish you when you make mistakes like that,” Coach Chris Carmichael said.

The first half concluded with the Bruins down 2-0. As the second half began, the ladies showed great passion as they looked to get back in the game. The team had many great opportunities and Jenn Wise would capitalize on one such opportunity to score drawing the lead to 2-1 Bears.

With the game drawing to a close, the Bruins threw everything they had at the net, desperately trying to put home the equalizer. Despite their efforts, the Bruins came up just short in a 2-1 loss.

“I am very proud of the way our girls turned it around,” Coach Carmichael said. “I really believe the better team lost today.”

The loss puts the Bruins 2-5-0 on the season, but with each passing game the ladies get that much stronger. Next up for the Bruins is a match against Georgia Gwinnett College on Saturday.
