The Bruins women soccer team will be traveling to Kentucky this weekend to play the Ohio Christian University Trailblazers and the Kentucky Christian University Knights, with the three teams rotating against each other.
This won't be the first time the Trailblazers and Knights have played each other. Last Saturday, for the first time since 2009, the Trailblazers shot their way to a lopsided 8-1 victory against the Knights. They played again last Wednesday, but the results were about the same, with OCU pummeling KCU 8-3. This has been a tough season so far for the Knights, they currently hold a 0-6 record and have struggled to put together goal shots or defend the goal. Ohio Christian University on the other hand has had a better start, with a 4-4 record. Also, OCU sophomore forward Katelyn Danner was named NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week on Thursday for her four goals and one assist in Wednesday's game against the Knights.
This trip to Kentucky will be the longest road trip the Bruins have experienced so far this season, but Coach Carmichael doesn't anticipate the distance being a huge factor, saying the team was bonding well on the trip. "They're laughing a lot," he said. "We'll get to the field a little earlier to let them get their legs moving."
Both the Trailblazers and Knights have see sawed in early season play, especially in consistency. Carmichael watched their game on Wednesday and said scouting the game allows him to pinpoint their weak areas. "We try to find their weak areas and then share it with the team," he said. Pre-game knowledge will help the Bruins, as they haven't played either team before.
The Bruins currently hold a 3-2-1 record, most recently pounding Johnson University Florida in an 8-0 win. Coach Carmichael says his team has been doing better in several areas. "We're getting the ball more in the attacking third and we're getting quality shots on goal," he said. "Right now the players are much more confident, which should carry them well this weekend."
First up is a Friday noon game against OCU, followed on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against KCU.
