The Lady Bruins struggles continued on Friday night as the team played the first of a two-game road trip in Jacksonville, Florida. The team is competing in the Trinity Baptist College tip-off tournament. Their opponents for the game would be the Thomas University Night Hawks. The Bruins entered the game having lost their first three games of the season. The Knight Hawks have one both of their games of the 2014-15 season.
From the opening tip, the Night Hawks played very physical but BJU responded well by jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. The team then allowed a 23-0 run by the Night Hawks to go down 25-8. The Bruins tried to rally to get back into the game, but the team was dealt a blow as Bre Bullard left the game with a knee injury. She did not return. The Bruins struggled to score and quickly found themselves in a deep hole down 36-13 at the half.
"It was a very rough and physical game." Coach Mike LeViere said. "We did show some poise but struggled to keep possession."
In the second half, things went from bad to worse for the Bruins as captain Kourtney Hoefler left the game with a separated shoulder. With two of their players out, the team struggled defensively, and the Knight Hawks took advantage. The Bruins struggled in the turnover margin as the team committed 26 turnovers on the night.
The final buzzer signaled the end of a difficult game for the Bruins as they fell to the Knight Hawks 82-32. "We just have to cut down on our mistakes," Coach LeViere said. "We are close to clicking, but we just have to keep working on our fundamentals. If we shoot the ball close to what we are capable of, we will be in most games."
With the loss, the Bruins drop their fourth straight game and are 0-4 on the season. Brianna Delaney was the leading scorer for the Bruins with five points. Next up, the Bruins will play on Saturday afternoon against Trinity Baptist College.Â
