Lady Bruins Upset by Trailblazers 1-0

Ohio Christian University hands team first loss of the 2014 season

Box Score
Despite many opportunities and a called-back goal, the Lady Bruins suffered their first loss of the 2014 season as they fell to Ohio Christian University 1-0 in Circleville, Ohio. "We controlled every part of this game but just couldn't finish it," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Any other day this is probably a lopsided score, but hats off to OCU for a scrappy contest in doing what they needed to do to beat us." The two teams met in the NCCAA national tournament last season, with the Bruins coming away with a 2-0 victory en route to the team's first national title. The Trailblazers were looking to play the role of spoiler as they took the field against BJU.

From the opening kickoff, the Bruins mad several adjustments and began to look for opportunities on frame. Several times throughout the half, the Bruins would execute great combination play, only to have their opportunity miss the net. The team outshot OCU 13-2 in the first half. With seconds remaining in the half, Kristen Haertlein broke through the defense and drilled a beautiful shot into the back of the net. The celebration was halted as the referee called a no-goal due to time expiring for the half.

"It was a questionable call," Coach Carmichael said. "That being said we had plenty of chances throughout and just couldn't finish."

In the second half, both teams looked for the go-ahead goal. That goal would come in the 55th minute as Autumn Adams fired a beautiful shot into the back of the net to give OCU the lead. The crowd was rejuvenated as the Trailblazers were eyeing the upset. The Bruins began to play much more aggressive as the team sought the equalizer. Each opportunity was cleared out by the Trailblazer defense. The final horn sounded handing the Bruins their first loss of the 2014 season and snapping the team's three-game winning streak.

"We'll see them again," Coach Carmichael remarked. "We had plenty of chances to finish and we just couldn't today."

The Bruins outshot OCU 22-4 in the match, but the team struggled to finish despite many opportunities throughout the game. The Bruins will finish up their road trip tomorrow afternoon as the team will play Kentucky Christian University at 1 p.m.
