Box Score The Bruins scored early and often en route to a 9-0 victory over the Johnson University of Florida Suns. "Today worked out well for us," Coach Carmichael said. "It was good to get Spencer Martin and Rebecca Luttrell back into the mix and I felt like everyone stepped up great for us tonight. We needed to show a little more patience and be better with our possession." The team was coming off a 0-0 draw with Truett-McConnell College last Thursday night. Johnson University came into the match on a three-game losing streak as the two teams took the field in front of the Bruin faithful at Alumni Stadium.
Rebecca Luttrell and the Bruins offense used
seven first-half goals to defeat the Suns 9-0. Lauren Peek started the scoring onslaught for the Bruins in the 4th minute of play as she received a beautiful breakaway pass from Spencer Martin for the goal. Six minutes later,
Rebecca Luttrell scored off another assist from Spencer Martin to increase the lead to 2-0. "We were really getting the third man involved tonight," Bruins midfielder Spencer Martin said. "We were really bringing in the wings and trying to have a lot more off the ball movement."
Martin recorded a goal for the Bruins as seven different players scored for the team in the first half. The team took a commanding 7-0 lead into the break while outshooting the Suns 26-0 in the first half.
"We played a team that got gassed out pretty quickly," Coach Carmichael said. "Our main goal was to take advantage of numbers and possess and spread the field. It was a good performance and got some good goals from a number of our players."
In the second half, the Bruins were able to excel and work on combination play. The Bruins defense stood strong as goalies Tori Anderson and Tessa Hoskinson were not challenged at all throughout the match. Anna Daulton and Tash Walters scored for the Bruins in the second half to give the team a solid 9-0 victory over Johnson University of Florida.
"We had a lot of goal scoring opportunities tonight so that helped," Coach Carmichael said. "Our combination play got better in second half and we are going to have to replicate that in a much tougher match tomorrow."
The Bruins dominated possession and pace of play as the team outshot the Suns 44-1 in the match. Anna Daulton and Natasha Walters each scored two goals for the Bruins while Lauren Peek, Spencer Martin, Rebecca Luttrell, Kristen Haertlein and Paige Englehart each scored one goal. Lauren Foushee and Spencer Martin each picked up two assists and Tessie Estrella picked up one assist. The team will relish in their first victory of the season, but the Bruins will have to quickly put this first victory behind them as the team will face a tough home match Saturday afternoon against Southern Wesleyan University.
