Lady Bruins Ground Eagles 72-52 For 5th Straight Win

Hannah Tompkins powers Bruins with 17 points as team captures win at home over Pensacola Christian College

The Lady Bruins picked up where they left off as the team rode the red-hot shooting of Hannah Tompkins to come away with a 72-52 win over rival Pensacola Christian College on Friday night.

"I was just feeling it and was ready to play," Bruins' guard Hannah Tompkins said. "I really wanted to give the fans a good game and my Mom came down and surprised me so I wanted to play a good game for her. God was good and the shots were falling."

The Bruins came into the game on Friday night with 4 straight wins and were 7-10 on the season. The team has come out strong for the second half of the season and are playing great team basketball. Their opponent for Friday night would be the PCC Eagles. The two rival teams have played four times before and have split the series 2-2. The Bruin faithful were out in full voice as the next chapter of this rivalry was about to be written.

After the Bruins struck first with a Hannah Tompkins 3-pointer, the Eagles responded with a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead. The Bruins slowly chipped their way back into the game by working the ball inside and opening up opportunities for outside looks. The team eventually regained the lead after Hannah Tompkins came through again with a three point shot. The team benefitted as Eagles leading scorer Alyssa Loudermilk picked up her third foul, forcing her to sit a majority of the first half .From there, the Bruins continued to play great defense and were able to force the Eagles to foul. At the half, the Bruins had a 31-21 lead.

"I thought we did a really good job of recognizing what they were giving us and taking advantage of that," Coach LeViere said. "We knew our shots were going to start falling and our players really stepped up on offense and defense."

In the second half, the Bruins caught fire as the team shot50% from behind the arch to continue to build their lead up to as much as . The Eagles came roaring back behind the play of Alyssa Loudermilk who powered the team back to within striking distance 40-28. Julia Wright and Hannah Tompkins responded by scoring 8 straight points for the Lady Bruins and the team never looked back as they won the game 72-52.

"We're on the right track," Coach LeViere said. "The girls have come in prepared and I think we are meshing really well. We played well and did a lot of little things right tonight and had players make baskets at big times tonight. I think we are maturing as a basketball team and taking advantage."

Hannah Tompkins led all scorers with 17 points while Julia Wright chipped in 11. Kendra Jeffcott finished the day with 9 points and 13 rebounds. The team outrebounded the Eagles 40-29 to help secure their 5th straight win. The Lady Bruins now are 8-10 on the season and will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday afternoon as they welcome the Bluefield State College Blues to Greenville.
