Box Score After a stellar shooting performance on Friday night, the Lady Bruins responded with a dismal performance shooting just 20% from the field in a 68-39 loss to Bluefield State College on Saturday afternoon.
"This team plays a different style of defense and they are bigger and stronger than some of the opponents we faced this season," Coach Mike LeViere said. "After a big game for us last night, we struggled a little bit since last night took so much out of us with it being a rival game. We needed to be smarter with the ball in this game and we weren't. We were worn down by their physical play which results in poor decisions and bad shot selection."
Chalice Pack had 8 points for the Bruins, but the team shot
just 20% from the field and committed 26 turnovers in the 68-39
loss to Bluefield State College. The Bruins entered Saturday's game after an impressive 72-52 win over rival Pensacola Christian College on Friday night. The team was in the midst of a 5-game winning streak. The Bluefield State College Blues compete in NCAA DII and entered Saturday's game with a 7-4 record. The Bruins looked to keep up their winning ways as they took the court.
Maggi Ford started the Bruins off with a three-point bomb and the team looked to be picking up where they left off on Friday night. The Blues had other intentions as the team forced the Bruins into 5 straight turnovers which translated into a 10-0 run giving Bluefield State a 12-5 lead. From there, the Bruins tried to claw their way back into the game but after Brianna Delaney picked up her second foul, the Bruins were limited in their post play and the Blues took advantage.
"I was frustrated," Delaney said. "I needed to be smarter and be more aware of where I was on the court and be better positioned."
The Bruins couldn't find an answer for the Blues suffocating defense as the team committed 15 turnovers throughout the first half as the team went into the locker room trailing Bluefield State College 36-18.
"I was happy with how we played defensively," Coach LeViere said. "We were able to limit some of their opportunities, but the turnovers and not taking care of the ball doesn't allow us to keep the game close."
In the second half, the Bruins started off again with a three-pointer from Brianna Delaney but the Blues again answered with an 18-2 run to take control of the game. The Bruins shooting woes continued as the team shot just 9% from behind the arch and 15% from the field in the 2nd half. The poor shooting combined with 26 turnovers allowed the Blues to stay on top. As the final buzzer sounded, the Blues had snapped the Bruins winning streak with a 68-39 win."We struggled alot with mental toughness today," Bruins captain Kourtney Hoefler said. "We should have individually been more prepared and we let them into our heads early on and we played their game instead of playing our game."
No Bruins player scored in double figures for this game as Chalice Pack led the Bruins with 8 points. Kourtney Hoefler had 7 points and 10 rebounds for the team as the Bruins took a small victory in outrebounding Bluefield State 39-38. The team is now 8-11 on the season and will welcome Tennessee Temple University next Friday night.
