Lady Bruins Eclipse Suns 11-0

Team unleashes offensive firepower as BJU blanks Johnson University Florida in Greenville

Box Score
The Lady Bruins were determined to get their 2015 season back on track. They did so in a big way on Friday night as the team unleashed a fury of goals against Johnson University Florida to come away with an 11-0 victory on Friday night.

"We wanted to win bad," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "This match was huge for us because we knew collectively we had been playing well but just falling short. But the strength of our schedule in September is going to prepare us for this month as we work towards regionals."

dominated Johnson University of Florida 11-0 on Friday night.
The Bruins and Suns had met earlier in the season with the Bruins winning 8-0 in Kissimmee, Florida. The Bruins entered the match with a 3-8 record and were 2-1 in conference play. The team had suffered 4-straight losses coming into the match on Friday night including a heartbreaker against conference rival Toccoa Falls College last week. As the team took the field in front of their hometown fans, the mission was simple: win.

It didn't take long for the Bruins to break into the scoring column as the team came out strong with high intensity and great poise and possession in the early minutes. Abby Davis put the Bruins on the board in the 6th minute with a goal and minutes later added another goal for the team to put BJU up 2-0. As the minutes continued to tick by, the Bruins became more and more confident as they used good combination play to work into the attacking third.

Mimi Lozano added her 6th goal of the season in the 36th minute as she blasted a shot past the Suns keeper to put the Bruins up 4-0. Lozano added another goal off a beautiful header just before the half to give the team a comfortable 4-0 cushion at the break.

"We knew we had to come into this month with a good high-charged offense and attacking scheme. Combination play was working well and the speed of play was good to help us create opportunities."

In the second half, the Bruins came out with the same energy and intensity and the results were much of the same as the team continued to pound the Suns net with shots. The Bruins outshot JUFL 45-4 throughout the match including putting 27 shots in frame. Lauren Foushee began the 2nd half scoring for the team in the 51st minute as her goal put the Bruins up 5-0.

From there, goals by Spencer Martin, Tessie Estrella, Caralise Roach, Natasha Walters, Miriam Lozano and Lauren Foushee helped the Bruins put an exclamation point on a dominant conference win by blanking the Suns 11-0.

"The chemistry was great tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "Last week especially we had been working on unity and playing unselfishly and helping each other. It was awesome to see them play that way tonight. We have to keep working hard on both sides of the ball and if we do that we should be okay."

Miriam Lozano had a hat trick for the team while Lauren Foushee and Abby Davis each scored two goals. With the win, the team improves to 4-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference. The Bruins will have a quick turnaround as they welcome the University of Pikeville to Greenville on Saturday night.
