Box Score The rocket right foot of Mimi Lozano completed the Lady Bruins come-from-behind rally as the team scored two goals in the 2nd half to defeat Montreat College 2-1 on Monday night.
"I am very proud of the team tonight," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "They stepped up and gave maximum effort for the whole match."
The Bruins were coming off back to back losses as they entered Monday's match, and the team was looking to climb back into the winning column as they took the pitch. In the opening minutes, the Bruins and Cavaliers looked to set the tone. The Bruins did an excellent job of possession and defensively were able to keep the Cavaliers from finding the back of the net. The team outshot the Cavaliers 9-5 in the first half.
Just before the half, the Bruins were dealt a severe blow as they were called for a foul outside the box. On the ensuing free kick, a beautiful bending shot found its way into the back of the net as the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead. The two teams went into the break with the Bruins trailing 1-0.
"We had great composure even in falling behind right at the end of the first half," Coach Carmichael said. "
Our possession was excellent and work rate was very high."In the second half, the Bruins were determined to not let another close game slip away as they pressured the Cavaliers net with shots. At the midway point of the half, Sarah Herr put the Bruins back into the match as she notched her first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1. The Bruins rode their renewed energy and continued to control the pace and possession of the game.
As the match was winding down, both teams knew the next goal would probably be the difference-maker. With just over two minutes remaining, Miriam Lozano found space and drilled a shot past the goalkeeper to come up with the goal that mattered most as she put the Bruins up 2-1. That beautiful goal proved to be the difference as the Bruins held on for the 2-1 victory.
"We ran a new system of play and they played it very well," Coach Carmichael said. "All of the girls stepped up and I am very proud of the effort. Courtney Nash and her Montreat team gave us a great battle and she has done an excellent job with their program."
With the win, the Bruins improve to 2-3 on the season. Sarah Herr and Miriam Lozano provided the scoring for the Bruins as the team picked up a big win on the road. Next up, the Bruins return home on Thursday night as they welcome St. Andrews University to Alumni Stadium at 5 p.m.
