Davis Fuels Bruins Rout of Cavaliers 7-1

Team wins 5th straight match with defeat of Montreat College

Box Score
Abby Davis set a program record as she scored four goals in the Bruins 7-1 win over Montreat College on Tuesday night. The wins marks the teams 5th in a row. "I felt really good going into the game," Davis said. "We just have to keep putting in the work every practice like it is the day before the national championship. We have to keep working hard, trusting each other, communicating and giving God the glory for it all."

The Bruins and Cavaliers took the pitch on a gorgeous night at Alumni Stadium. The fans were out in full voice to see the winning streak continue. Early on, it was the Cavaliers who had an early opportunity as Alanna Castaneda dribbled through the Lady Bruin defense. Bruins goalkeeper Kristen Haertlein was able to make the save to keep the match 0-0.

From that point on, the Bruins took control of the match. Two minutes later, forward Abby Davis broke loose on the left side of the field and placed the ball in the far corner of the goal past the opposing keeper Jordan DeVaan to put the Bruins up 1-0. Davis nearly added another goal on the next possession but her breakaway chance was turned aside by a great save by Jordan DeVaan.

The Bruins continued to knock on the door to try to extend their lead, but a defensive lapse gave the Cavaliers the equalizer. After Alanna Castaneda intercepted a pass by Jennifer Townsend, she dribbled through three different Bruins defenders before burying a shot in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. This would turn out to be the only goal of the night for the Cavaliers.

At the midway point of the half, the Bruins again regained the lead as Mimi Lozano made a beautiful pass to the middle to Abby Davis who finished the play to give BJU a 2-1 lead. Davis completed her hat trick just minutes later with a highlight goal as she launched a beautiful shot into the upper right corner of the net to make it 3-1. Montreat tried to claw their way back into the game, but the Bruins back line did a great job of controlling possession and cutting off the lanes of the Cavaliers offense. At the half, the Bruins led 3-1.

"Our work effort has been phenomenal lately in practice," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Right now all of our players are healthy and the energy is up and everything is clicking right now."

As the second half began, the Cavaliers were looking to cut into the lead and the Bruins were looking for some insurance as the two teams took the pitch. Both teams traded possession in the opening minutes but the Bruins began to regroup for more chances on frame. In the 59th minute, Davis scored her 4th goal of the match to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead. From there, a pair of goals by Natasha Walters and a goal by Miriam Lozano helped the Bruins run away with a 7-1 victory over Montreat College.

"Everyone stepped up big time in the game tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "We are taking this one game at a time. Every game is our national championship and that's how we are treating it just focusing on each game going forward."

Abby Davis led the way for the Bruins with four goals and one assist on the night. Mimi Lozano finished with one goal and two assists and Natasha Walters finished with two goals. The Bruins outshot the Cavaliers 28-10 throughout the match while putting 15 shots on frame. With the win, the team improves to 5-2 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road for a match against Tennessee Wesleyan College on September 20.
