Bruins Volleyball Bounces Back with 3-0 Win over Eagles

Team sweeps Pensacola Christian College to move to 11-3 on the season

Box Score
The Lady Bruins volleyball team got back to their winning ways on Saturday as the team defeated rival Pensacola Christian College 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17) in Pensacola, Florida. "This was an important region win for us today," Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We matched up well against last year's region champions and we were able to come away with the win."

The Bruins had their nine-match winning streak broken earlier this week as the team fell to Johnson and Wales University (1-3). But the team was determined to battle back as they took on Pensacola, and they would be fueled by an unlikely hero in the win.

In the first set, the Bruins were able to trade points with the Eagles and eventually built a slim lead. The Bruins offense was getting in flow as Kirstin Christmas, Erin Jarvis and Kendra Jeffcott scored several kills to help the team maintain their advantage. The team got a boost as Marjorie Elliot subbed in and provided the difference as the Bruins took the first set 25-16.

The Bruins continued to ride momentum into second set as the team got into the groove of their offense with good sets and kills. The Bruins defense also came up strong several times throughout the set, but the Eagles didn't allow the Bruins to pull away. Again, Elliot was the difference for the Bruins off the bench as she motivated the team to a 25-17 win in the 2nd set.

With the win within reach, the Bruins came out strong in the third and final set. With each point, the Bruins confidence grew as they strung together good team play to win the final set 25-17 and capture the match 3-0.

"We started out a little slow but Marjorie gave us the much-needed spark," Coach Denny said. "She provided momentum with her intensity of play and we were able to feed off of that as a team."

Kirstin Christmas led the Bruins with 11 kills on the day while Erin Jarvis had 8 and Kendra Jeffcott had 6. Rachel Tubbs had 24 assists in the match as the Bruins improved to 11-3 on the season. The team has won 10 of their last 11 matches. Next up, the Bruins will host Bluefield College on September 30 in Greenville, South Carolina.
