Lozano, Davis Power Lady Bruins to 4-2 Victory

Big first half is key in victory over Milligan College

Box Score Thanks to the one two punch of Abby Davis and Mimi Lozano, the Bob Jones University Lady Bruins defeated Milligan College 4-2 on Saturday night. "Hats off to Milligan tonight because they really threw us off of our game plan," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "It wasn't the prettiest game for us in possession or our style of play but our team did a great job of solving those problems to come away with the win."

Although the final score was 4-2, the Bruins were relentless on the opposing goal tallying 22 shots in the match. However, the game didn't start the way the home team Bruins expected. After a Milligan cornerkick, Amy Olvera headed a beauty into the far right corner of the goal to give the Buffaloes a 1-0 advantage just ten minutes into the match. The Bruins went right back on the attack and got their chance at the equalizer after a hand ball penalty was given to Milligan in their own box. Mimi Lozano took a confident penalty shot to even the score at 1-1.

Just seven minutes later, striker Abby Davis received a through ball from Kristyn Rygh and kept the opposing defender on her hip while firing a beautiful shot in the opposite corner to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. But the scoring was just getting started for the first half.

Lozano came up big again for the Bruins as she scored again before the half was over to put the team up 3-1. With a two-goal cushion, it looked as though the Bruins would end the half strong but Milligan forward Bekah Cundiff ripped a shot past Bruins keeper Kristen Haertlein to pull the Buffaloes back in the game 3-2 going into the half.

"We're starting to understand that one momentary lapse can result in a goal," Coach Carmichael said. "That's what happened tonight but I was happy with how our girls responded in battling back."

In the second half, the Bruins and Buffaloes came out and exchanged possession in the opening minutes. Both teams had several opportunities to score but the Bruins continued to cling to a one-goal lead. Abby Davis provided the insurance the team was looking for as she beat two defenders, out-hustled the third and calmly placed it past the oncoming keeper for a 4-2 lead.

The Buffaloes could never recover as BJU held on for the 4-2 victory. "We did a great job of just reading the game and taking advantage of it," Coach Carmichael said. "We need to be able to work on our technical abilities to work out of pressure and if we handle that then I think we'll be putting all the pieces together."

The Bruins beat the Buffaloes in the possession battle, as well as in the total shots category, 22-9. Lozano and Davis both had two goals while Lozano also added one assist. The team improved to 2-2 on the season and will now go on a two-game road trip next weekend. First up, the team will battle Johnson University of Florida on Friday afternoon.
