Lady Bruins Sweep Wildcats 3-0

Box Score
The Lady Bruins volleyball team got back into the winner's column on Thursday afternoon as the team defeated Johnson and Wales University 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) in Charlotte, North Carolina. With the win, the Bruins improve to 17-13 on the season.

"We had a good match both offense and defense tonight," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Our serve receive was strong and we had great passing to setup our offensive attack."

The Bruins and Wildcats met on October 13 in Greenville with the Bruins winning 3-1 in their Homecoming match. It was senior day for the Wildcats as they honored the lone senior on their squad. The Lady Bruins would spoil the festivities as they played well from start to finish in the match.

In the opening set, the Bruins came out with a strong serving attack as they were able to get the early lead. The Bruins offensive presence was felt by the Wildcats as Katherine Ring, Laura Gaston and Rachel Tubbs made kills to increase the lead. The Bruins were able to maintain their level of play as they took the opening set 25-16.

As the second set began, the Bruins again relied on a strong serve as the Wildcats looked for answers. Lauren Johnson had two aces as the Bruins continued to control the flow of the match. The Wildcats were able to respond but the defensive play of Saleena Walker helped the Bruins stop extended rallies as the Bruins won the second set by the same score as the first with a 25-16 win. The Bruins led the match 2-0 and had the Wildcats back against the wall.

With the sweep in sight, the Bruins came out with confidence as they moved ahead. The Wildcats refused to give in as they stayed within striking distance for much of the set. The Bruins came back with another strong serve including several aces as they closed in on the sweep. Despite the efforts by JWU, the Bruins maintained composure as they combined great play in all facets to hold on for a 25-21 victory in the final set to complete a 3-0 sweep.

Laura Gaston led the Bruins with 10 kills on the night while Erin Jarvis and Katherine Ring had 8 and Rachel Tubbs finished with 7. Saleena Walker finished the night with 28 digs as the Bruins played their final road regular season contest.

Next up, the Bruins will close out the regular season of play on Saturday as the team welcomes John Wesley University and Allen University for a tri-match. The Bruins will honor their two seniors on the squad during the 12 p.m. match against John Wesley University.
