The Lady Bruins volleyball team dropped their sixth match in a row as the team fell to the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers in straight sets 3-0 on Tuesday night in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
"We continue to struggle on the offensive side of the game," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "While I was please with our floor defensive effort, our offense has to step up more if we are going to be competitive in these type of matches."
With the loss the Lady Bruins drop to 7-10 on the season. The Bruins and Pioneers met early in December in Greenville with the Bruins edging SMC 3-2 in a five-set thriller.
The Pioneers took an early lead in set one as they were able to execute offensively for points. Erin Jarvis and Laura Gaston were able to get some kills for the Bruins, but the team couldn't catch SMC as the Pioneers took the opening set 25-16
In the second set, the Pioneers again were able to return the Bruins hits and eventually gain the points as they took the lead. The Bruins were kept alive defensively by Saleena Walker and company as they kept the match within striking distance. Again, the Pioneers were able to score at crucial points as they took the second set 25-17 to lead the match 2-0.
As the third set began, the Pioneers continued to ride their momentum as they looked for the sweep. The Bruins tried to counter, but couldn't sustain an offensive scoring touch. The Pioneers stretched their lead and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Bruins 25-15 and win the match 3-0.
Laura Gaston, Erin Jarvis and Katherine Ring each had 6 kills for the Bruins while Saleena Walker contributed 31 digs in the match. The Lady Bruins fall to 7-10 on the season and will be on the road this weekend for back to back tri-matches Friday and Saturday in Hickory, North Carolina.
