Lady Bruins Can't Slow Flying Fleet in 96-78 Loss

Box Score

The game started well for the Lady Bruins as Sha'ron Brunson scored the first basket of the game with a floater over Erskine forward Naomi Stuger, but that was the last lead the Bruins would have as the Flying Fleet went on a 15-0 run and soared to a 98-76 win on Monday night in Greenville. Sha'Ron Brunson led the team with 16 points and 5 rebounds as BJU falls to 12-16 on the season.

Despite digging an early hole, the Bruins battled back with just three minutes left in the second quarter. Sarah Thomsen hit a step-back three, Kylee Leffew broke to the basket for a layup, and Amanda Bates scored on a hook-shot to get the Bruins within two points of the Fleet lead.

"We did two things well in that second quarter run," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "We broke the pressure, and started finishing at the rim. In the second quarter, we broke down the press and started to get good open shots."

The Bruins shot a lot of free throws, but just couldn't put the ball in the basket. The team shot just 12-23 from the charity stripe and couldn't get the shots to fall when they needed them on the offensive end. Erskine hit two threes and sliced through the Bruins zone for multiple layups as they ended the half up 52-40.

In the second half, Rachel Clark came up big for the Bruins with a much-needed spark off of the bench. Clark tallied 6 points and 12 boards while playing great defense and communicating well off of the bench. Unfortunately, Erskine pushed their halftime lead to 22 points when the third quarter ended.

The Fleet put up much of the same in the 4th quarter as the Bruins struggled to find a way to slow them down. The final buzzer handed Erskine College the 98-76 win.

Despite suffering a tough loss, the Bruins had several bright spots throughout as the team shot 48% from the three-point line and had 19 assists. Brunson scored 16 points while Mandy Bates scored 15, Sarah Thomsen scored 13 and Kylee Leffew finished the night with 10 points. The loss moved the Lady Bruins to 12-16 on the season. The team will look to get back on track this weekend against Piedmont International University on Saturday afternoon at the Davis Field House.
