The Lady Bruins volleyball team kept up their winning ways on Tuesday night as the team defeated the John Wesley University Lions 3-0 to improve to 6-4 on the season. The win marks the 5th in a row for the team. The Bruins were coming off a 3-2 victory over Wesleyan College on Monday night as the team is in the midst of eight games in eight days.
"We played well as a team and several players stepped up at different times," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We had excellent blocking tonight which helped stop their strong hitters."
In the opening set, the Bruins came out strong as they used good sets and smart placement of hits for points. The defense stood strong at the net as well as Laura Gaston providing the blocking touch as the Bruins increased their lead. The Lions kept the score close, but a service error ended the set with the Bruins winning 25-21.
Defense was prominent for the Bruins in the second set as Rachel Tubbs, Erin Jarvis and Laura Gaston had several blocks up front to keep the Lions at bay. Saleena Walker provided the serving touch for the Bruins as the team built a large lead. The Lions refused to back down as they slowly clawed their way back within striking distance. Great offensive kills by Marjorie Elliott and Rachel Tubbs helped the Bruins close in for the set. Katherine Ring added an exclamation point to the win in the set as her block gave the Bruins a 25-22 win.
The Lions were determined to make a game of it and it showed in set three as JWU came out strong to take the lead. The Bruins responded as Lauren Johnson used great serves to help the Bruins overtake the Lions and build the lead. Erin Jarvis sealed the win for the Bruins with an emphatic kill as the Bruins won the third set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
Rachel Tubbs led the Bruins with 11 kills while Erin Jarvis had 10 and Laura Gaston had 6. Saleena Walker played well defensively with 24 digs on the night. With the win, the Lady Bruins improve to 6-4 on the season.
Next up, the team will play four matches in two days with two tri-matches coming up this weekend. The team will welcome Johnson University of Florida and Pensacola Christian College on Friday night.
