Lady Bruins Edge Cavs 1-0

Despite the wet playing conditions due to rain, the Lady Bruins fought through as the team edged the Montreat College Cavaliers 1-0 to capture their first win of the 2017 season. 

"This was a great win against a very good opponent," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We got a fantastic effort out of the whole team and despite playing in slippery field conditions, we were able to possess well and were attacking minded which created a number of great opportunities for us." 

The Bruins entered the match on Saturday after opening their season by losing the first two games. The team was determined to get back on track as they took the pitch to take on the Montreat Cavaliers who entered the match after dropping their hme opener to Johnson and Wales University. 

In the opening minutes, both teams tried to gather their footing as they looked to measure the effects the rain would have on their play. The Bruins were able to push the ball into the attacking third as Sarah Herr and Caralise Roach gained shots on goal early on. Montreat had several chances of their own but the score remained 0-0. 

Bailey Martin broke the scoreless tie in the 28th minute of play as she scored a goal off an assist from Abby Davis to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. The Cavs tried to respond but the Bruins defense stood strong as the half ended with BJU up 1-0. 

In the second half, the Bruins looked to increase their lead. The team was able to possess in the midfield as Lauren Foushee and Bailey Martin helped to feed the Bruins attack line for good looks on goal. Abby Davis and Kaitlyn Hummel fired several shots on frame, but the Cavs continued to turn them aside. 

With just minutes to play, the Cavaliers pushed ahead to try to gain the equalizer. The Bruins stood strong defensively and maintained possession throughout the closing minutes as the Bruins held on for the 1-0 road win. 

"Montreat is a good team and I credit Coach Nash with doing an excellent job in developing their team," Coach Carmichael said. "We need consistency from this point on but the team did a great job to rising above the challenge to be very attacking minded and this win should provide some momentum for us."

With the win, the Bruins improve to 1-2 on the season. Next up, the team will continue their road match play as they battle Milligan College on Monday night in Montreat, North Carolina.
