Spartans Shutout Lady Bruins 5-0

Box Score
The Lady Bruins soccer team fell to USC Upstate 5-0 on Tuesday night after a dominant second half performance from the Spartans. BJU came into the match after back to back wins over Columbia International University and John Wesley University. Unfortunately, the team couldn't carry their momentum into this match as they fall to 3-7 on ths season.

"USC Upstate is a great team," said Coach Carmichael. "We knew we needed to play our A-game in order to win and when you don't a good team like this is going to make you pay."

It was a competitive first half as both the Lady Bruins and Spartans were creating scoring opportunities. About halfway through the half Abby Davis fired a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper; Bailey Martin charged in for the loose ball but it was gathered up by Spartans' keeper Samantha Munyon for the save.

Just a few minutes later in the 25th minute, Spartan forward Emma Honis scored the first goal of the match when she fired a rocket into the upper right corner of the goal. It ended up being the lone goal of the first half as the Lady Bruins did a great job defensively to contain the Spartans' high powered offensive attack.

As the 2nd half began, the Spartans began to wear down the Bruins defensive back line by winning the battle of possession. The Lady Bruins defense couldn't carry over their success from the first half into the second as the Spartans began to find open lanes to score.

In the 54th minute, Delaney Bussey stretched the Spartans lead with a goal to make it 2-0. Bussey would score again just three minutes later and the Spartans never looked back as they scored four second-half goals to defeat the Lady Bruins 5-0.

"We just didn't do the little things in order to win," Coach Carmichael said. "We didn't make the right pass and weren't mentally sharp with our decisions."

The Spartans out shot the Bruins 18-2 in the match. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 3-7 on the season. Next up, the team will host Truett-McConnell University on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
