The Lady Bruins volleyball team dropped their fifth match in a row on Thursday night as the team fell to Montreat College 3-0 in Montreat, North Carolina.
"We went up against a much stronger and smarter team tonight," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Was looking forward to bringing a competitive match but unfortunately we did not."
The Lady Bruins were coming off a tough loss on Tuesday night in which the team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to come up just short in a 3-2 loss. Still, the team was hoping to get back on track as they took the court against the Cavaliers who were 8-9 on the season.
In the opening set, the Cavs were able to jump out to an early lead thanks to big kills up front. The Bruins tried to recover but the team couldn't find a consistent rhythm of play as Montreat took the opening set 25-16.
The Cavaliers picked up where they left off in set two as they exposed the Bruins holes defensively to again jump out to an early lead. The Bruins tried to claw their way back into the game with kills from Katherine Ring and company but each Bruins point turned into multiple points for the Cavs as Montreat took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-12 win in the second set.
With momentum in hand and the victory in sight, the Cavaliers rode the energy of their hometown crowd as they took the lead and never looked back closing out the Bruins 25-13 to win the match 3-0.
"We have much work to do if we are going to turn around our season," Coach Denny said.
Katherine Ring and Rachel Tubbs led the Bruins with six kills each on the night. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 7-9 on the season. Next up, the team will be on the road again Tuesday night for a matchup with Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
