Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | by Jonathan Armstrong

Cavaliers Storm Bruins in Second Half to Win 4-0

Despite great effort and intensity, the Bruins fell to the Montreat College Cavaliers 4-0 at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday night. The Bruins played with great energy all game, but the team was unable to keep pace with the speedy Cavaliers' attack.

The Bruins were able to create chances offensively but were not able to tally a goal for the second straight game. "We have a number of guys on the team capable of scoring goals," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We have got to continue to get guys reps in practice, and I believe those reps will translate into the game."

The Cavaliers opened scoring in the first half in the tenth minute. Forward Raphael Duarte possessed the ball from a Bruins defender at the top of the box. Shortly after, Duarte was able to create space and fire a shot into the back of the net, making it 1-0.

The Bruins responded well after the goal and even created scoring chances of their own. The Cavaliers offense turned up the intensity towards the end of the half as they tried to exploit the counterattack as often as possible. Highlighted by a great kick save by Isaac Landry, the Bruins defense held strong, keeping the Cavaliers advantage at one going into the half.

The Bruins kept the same energy and effort heading into the second half, but were unable to keep the Cavaliers from breaking the game wide open.

In the fifty-second minute, the Cavaliers midfielder Oliver Nuno-Rodriguez fielded the ball off a Bruins' clearance midway between the goal and midfield. He promptly settled the ball and fired a shot on frame that found the back of the net just out of the reach of goalie Isaac Landry.

The Cavaliers continued their onslaught in the sixty first minute. Jeovanni Ordaz found striker Melle Rekvelt wide open in the box. After making a beautifully timed run, Rekvelt quickly scored his first goal of the game, giving the Cavaliers a 3-0 advantage.

The Cavaliers rounded out the scoring in the eighty-seventh minute off a corner kick. Juan Carlos Ramirez sent a corner into the box and Rekvelt was able to outleap the Bruins defenders and head the ball past Landry to give him his second goal of the game. The Cavs would go on to win the match 4-0.

"Overall it was a back and forth game," Coach McCormick said. "Even though the score doesn't reflect it, we had a lot of the ball," said Coach McCormick.

With the loss, the Bruins fell to 2-7-1 on the year. The Bruins will travel this weekend to Jacksonville, Florida to face region rival Trinity Baptist College on Saturday.
