The Bruins men's soccer team got back into the winning column on Saturday evening as the team defeated Johnson University 4-1 in Knoxville, Tennessee. With the win, the Bruins improve to 5-9-1 on the season.
"It was a solid performance from our guys tonight," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We had really good possession and ball movement and we're looking forward to carrying this into our matches next week."
The Bruins came into the match having just been named the #1 ranked team in NCCAA DII according to the latest weekly poll. The team lived up to the ranking with a solid win on the road.
In the first half, the Bruins came out with good ball movement and combination play as they immediately attacked the Royals' net. Andrew Peterson provided the lone goal of the half as he received a great pass from Peter Waddy and finished the play to put the Bruins up 1-0. The Bruins looked to add to their lead while defensively the team was able to lockdown on the Royals and not allow them to gain consistent looks. At the half, the Bruins led 1-0.
The Bruins blew the doors open in the second half as the team came out strong from the opening kickoff. Karl Walker had a brilliant strike from just outside the box as he scored his team-leading 4th goal of the season to make the score 2-0. Sebastian Sulik assisted on the Walker goal and then added one of his own to help the Bruins increase their lead. Sulik was able to create an opportunity in the attacking third but the goal resulted in an own goal by the Royals as the score was 3-0.
As the match was beginning to come to a close, Bruins midfielder Laurent Cadet scored his first career goal with the team to put the Bruins up 4-0. The team was looking for the shutout but a mistake on a corner kick resulted in an own goal for the Bruins as the final score ended 4-1.
With the win, the Bruins have now won two of their last three games. The team will enter their final week of regular season this next week with two road games. First up, the Bruins will be on the road in Brevard, North Carolina on Monday for a matchup with Brevard College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
