The Lady Bruins kept up their winning ways on Tuesday night as the team swept Columbia College in straight sets to win their 10th match in a row. With the win, the Bruins improve to 26-5 on the season
"We tried a few different combinations tonight as we prepare for the regional tournament," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We played well and had different players contribute for us in key ways to get this win."
The Bruins and Koalas met on Saturday with the Bruins winning convincingly in a 3-0 sweep at the Davis Field House. With one final tune-up before the regional tournament, the Bruins took the court with confidence.
Brooke Beaver recorded a kill as the Bruins were off and running in the opening set. The team jumped out to an 8-2 lead with strong serves and good defensive play. Beaver provided more kills as the Bruins were able to find holes in the Koala defense early and often. Jordan Anderson came up with a block to seal the victory in the opening set as the Bruins won 25-12.
In the second set, the Bruins came out strong with a 13-4 lead. They continued to ride their momentum as they limited the Koalas offensively while feeding attackers up front for kills. Katherine Ring had a strong set as she recorded several kills. The Koalas couldn't maintain an offensive rhythm as the Bruins won 25-14 in set two to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bruins opened up with another early lead in the third set as the front line play of Ring and Beaver was again strong. The Koalas tried to claw their way back into the match, but the Bruins were determined to complete the sweep as Brooke Beaver hammered home a kill to finish the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Beaver and Ring led the Bruins with 7 kills each while Abby Plew had 6 kills in the match. Brittany Annand had 21 assists while Rachel Williams contributed 11. Defensively, Ring was instrumental on defense for the Bruins as the sophomore had four solo blocks and one block assist in the match. Saleena Walker led the Bruins with 22 digs as the Bruins completed their twenty-third sweep of the season.
The team secured the #1 seed for the NCCAA DII South Region Tournament. The Bruins will open pool play at regionals on Thursday with matches against #5 Trinity College and #4 Johnson University of Florida. The tournament will be played in Port Richey, Florida.
