Abby Davis scored the overtime winner as the Lady Bruins won their 3rd straight match with a 1-0 victory over Brevard College on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium. With the win, the Bruins improve to 6-4-2 on the season.
"This was a huge win for us," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Brevard is a good team and have been playing very well. Playing a quality opponent and to come away with a win is big for us at this point in the season."
The Bruins came into the match on Friday on the heels of back to back wins over Emory and Henry College and Toccoa Falls College. The Tornados came into the match on Tuesday night with a 7-4 record, having dropped back to back losses to Covenant College and Piedmont College.
In the opening minutes, both teams went back and forth with each trying to maintain possession. The Tornados were able to find space early on as they fired shots on frame but Bruins keeper Angelina Martin was up to the task as she made several saves in the opening half. The Bruins had chances of their own as Marissa Allebach and Abby Davis each had shots on goal that were saved. Despite chances from both teams, the first half ended as it began tied 0-0.
As the second half began, the Tornados came out strong as they looked to take the lead. Again, Martin came up with big saves for the Bruins as the freshman had 14 saves on the night. As the match began to draw to a close, both teams mounted one last push to try to find the game-winning goal. As the buzzer sounded, both teams headed to their benches to prepare for extra time with the score still locked 0-0.
In the extra time period, both teams balanced aggression on offense with not giving up the big play defensively. After the Tornados were called for a foul, Marissa Allebach took the free kick from just past midfield. Her lofting pass was settled by Abby Davis and Davis dodged one defender before bending a shot past the Tornadoes keeper as the Bruins won 1-0 in overtime.
"It was a great team effort for us tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "We played a great game. I know they are tired but they played so hard tonight."
Despite being outshot 24-9 in the match and 14-6 on frame, the Bruins made their opportunity count as they scored in extra time. Davis recorded her team-leading 13th goal of the season while Marissa Allebach recorded her second assist of the season. With the win, the Bruins have now won four of their last five matches as they are 6-4-2 on the season.
Next up, the Lady Bruins will welcome Kentucky Christian University on Saturday for their homecoming match. It will also be senior night as the program honors five seniors on the team this season.
