Less than 24 hours after opening their season with a 3-0 sweep, the Lady Bruins continued their winning ways as they captured a 3-0 victory over Piedmont College on Friday night in Greensboro, North Carolina.
"I was extremely proud of our team tonight," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We didn't give up and scored some critical points at critical times."
The Bruins again rode the offensive prowess of sophomore Courtney Bates who finished the night with 11 kills. The Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and had a good rhythm as a team. Still, the Lions remained within striking distance as the first set neared its end. Thanks to the setting of Rachel Tubbs the Bruins were able to close out the set winning 25-18.
The second set was the most dramatic of the night. The Lions jumped out to an early lead as they looked to draw even in the match. Both teams went back and forth with the Lions eventually getting to set point at 24-21. With their backs against the wall, the Bruins responded with three straight points to tie the set at 24-24. Each team had their chance to close out the set as the Bruins had three set points and the Lions had two. Eventually, the Bruins were able to battle for a 31-29 win in set number two to go up 2-0 in the match.
That dramatic finish proved to be a back-breaker for the Lions as the Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the first set thanks to several Lions play errors. The Bruins never looked back as they won the final set 25-9 to sweep the match 3-0.
Bates led the Bruins with 11 kills on the night while Brooke Beaver finished with seven. Rachel Williams had a strong day with 24 assists in the match as the senior did well to set her teammates up for well-placed kills. Saleena Walker led the Bruins defensively with 22 digs.
With the win, the Bruins improve to 2-0 to start the season. The team will be back in action for two matches tomorrow as part of a tip-off tournament at Greensboro College. The Bruins will battle Agnes Scott College at 9 a.m. and Greensboro College at 3 p.m.
