Lions Use Second Half Surge to Shutout Bruins 3-0

Despite being tied at the half, the Bruins couldn't slow the Piedmont College Lions in the second half as the team fell 3-0 on Saturday night in Demorest, Georgia. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 0-2 to start the season.

"We started the year by improving with each scrimmage and game but tonight we took some steps back," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We need to regroup and come prepared for our next game."

The Bruins entered Saturday's game on the heels of a 1-0 loss in their home opener against Spartanburg Methodist College on Thursday. From the opening kickoff, the Bruins struggled particularly in generating any offensive rhythm as the team wasn't able to generate a shot on goal the entire first half. The Lions were able to move the ball into scoring position, but the Bruins defense turned aside opportunities and keeper Isaac Landry made several saves throughout the first forty-five minutes. Still, as the halftime buzzer sounded the two teams ended the half as they began it tied 0-0. The Lions outshot the Bruins 10-0 in the first half.

In the second half, the Bruins looked to get something going as they came out looking to gain the upper hand. Instead, a foul in the box awarded the Lions a penalty shot just minutes into the second half. Isaac Landry came up with the save to keep the match scoreless. Just minutes later, the Lions finally found the back of the net as Ernesto Platas scored off a header to put the Lions up 1-0.

The Bruins came back looking to find the equalizer but the team struggled to keep possession. Andrew Peterson and Jesse Rush were each able to get a shot off but both sailed wide of the net. In the 72nd minute of play, the Lions extended their lead as Colin Owen scored a goal to make the score 2-0. The Lions would put the final exclamation point on the match in the final minute of play thanks to a breakaway goal scored by Lule Tekilemariam as the Bruins fell 3-0.

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 0-2 on the season. The team was outshot in the match 20-2 including an 11-0 shots on goal margin. Next up, the Bruins will be back home as they welcome Bryan College to Alumni Stadium on Tuesday night.
