Bruins Volleyball Bounces Back with Sweep of Greensboro College

The Lady Bruins bounced back in a big way on Thursday night as the team defeated Greensboro College in straight sets. With the win, the team is now 12-1 on the season.

The Bruins and Pride met earlier in the season with the Bruins sweeping Greensboro 3-0. The Bruins came out the strong, but quickly fell into a 6-10 hole due to a seven-point run for the Pride. It wasn't until Coach Denny called a timeout that the Bruins shook off their errors and got their heads back in the game. Multiple times, Greensboro would tip the ball, searching for a hole in the Bruin's defense. Saleena Walker and Brooke Beaver were ready and waiting to dig the ball. Walker had nine digs in the first set alone. Once the Bruins battled back to tie the set, they never looked back as they surged forward and win the set 25-17.

The Bruins' momentum continued into the second set which began with a 4-1 lead for the team. This time, they kept it. Kills and pushes were perfectly placed by Katherine Ring and Jordan Anderson, and the Bruins continued to stretch their lead. Serves were repeatedly successful; Beaver served four aces. The team also watched the line well as Greensboro consistently hit out of bounds. The set ended with an emphatic kill by Ring, finishing the set 25-14. The Bruins now led the match 2-0.

At the beginning of the third set, Greensboro came out looking to claw their way back into the game. However, the Bruins didn't back down. After they lost the first point, the Bruins never fell behind again. The score stayed relatively close and was even tied six different times until the Bruins pulled ahead 18-13. Ring and Beaver continued to kill Greensboro's defense as the Bruins pulled up to game point. Greensboro hit the ball out, and the Lady Bruins sealed their twelfth win of the season, 25-18.

"We started off strong but then we went through that spurt where we were making error after error after error," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "I called a timeout, and I think the team responded positively to that. We came back out and reduced our errors." Denny also said that the team wanted to distribute the sets more often. They did, and the kills from the middle were very successful.

The team was led in kills by Brooke Beaver, who had 11 kills. Katherine Ring and Jordan Anderson each had seven kills as well. Saleena Walker kept the team going with her digs as well, totaling 23 at the end of the match. The Lady Bruins hit the road on Friday to begin a weekend of matches in Kentucky and Ohio. They begin the trip playing Kentucky Christian University Friday at 6 p.m.
