The Bruins dropped a road contest on Saturday afternoon as a late run by Berry College handed the Bruins a 81-68 loss in Mount Berry, Georgia. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 1-3 to begin the season. Jayson Barnhart led the Bruins with 14 points while shooting 6-7 from the field.
"We faced one of the better D3 teams today," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Berry runs a great program. The game really changed when we had a player foul out and another go down with injury. They went on a big run after that and we couldn't find an answer."
The Bruins came into the game on the heels of their first victory of the season as the team defeated Oglethorpe University on Friday night. About 17 hours later, the Bruins were back on the court as they faced the Vikings who came into the game at 2-1.
From the opening tip, the Vikings used their home court advantage to jump out to a 7-2 lead. The Bruins responded as they traded baskets with the Vikings to keep the score close.
Near the midway point of the half, Jayson Barnhart scored in the paint as the Bruins trailed 19-11. Hayes Brush knocked down a three for BJU as the team went on a run to cut into the deficit and battled back to trail 21-19. Back and forth the two teams went before Daniel Fuller made a layup as the Bruins tied the score 33-33. The Vikings were able to close out the half well and took a 37-33 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Bruins came strong with back to back baskets as Zac Orr made a layup and Jon Allen hit a three followed by another three from Nate Ellenwood as the team took their first lead of the game 41-39. It didn't last long as the Vikings hit back to back threes to reclaim the lead.
With the game beginning to come to a close, the Bruins looked poised to make a run as they were within striking distance. Nate Ellenwood then picked up his fifth foul and the Vikings seized the opportunity as they ended the half outscoring BJU 22-6 to win 81-68.
"Overall, I am happy with this weekend," Coach Uwarow said. "We are improving each game which is where we want to be right now."
Chapman Harwood and Nate Ellenwood each had 10 points and 6 rebounds in the loss. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road again on Tuesday night as they face Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina.
