Five players scored in double figures as the Bob Jones University Bruins defeated the Toccoa Falls College Eagles 91-65 on Tuesday night marking the fourth win in a row. With the win, the team improves to 10-8 overall and 4-0 in region play.
Early on, Devin Dean provided the scoring touch as the freshman guard finished with 24 points on the night. The scoreboard continued to favor the Bruins throughout the early stages of the half as the team worked the ball around for open looks.
Although the Eagles were quick on their feet defensively, the Bruins' strategy of quick drives, passes and outside shots proved successful. Many times, a Bruins player drove toward the basket, only to pull back and quickly pass out after he'd successfully shifted the defense. The team was 60% in 3-point shots the first half.
The Bruins were equally successful on the defensive side, forcing the Eagles into tough looks and turnovers. A big run by the Bruins broke the game open as the team hit several shots to go into the half up 44-27.
The second half began similar to the first with Devin Dean again attacking the rim for points. The Eagles were able to chip away at the lead, but short runs were answered by the Bruins as they maintained a double-digit advantage.
With less than five minutes to play, the Bruins continued to hit their open looks and took advantage in rebounding with 16 defensive rebounds in the second half. At one point, the Bruins held a 27-point lead over the Eagles. In the end, the Bruins won 91-65.
Devin Dean lead in points scored for the Bruins with 24 points, while Nate Ellenwood led in assists for the night with 6 assists. The Bruins had another great performance offensively shooting 50% from the field and 40% from three point range. The team as a whole sank 82.6% of their free throws while owning the rebounding margin 39-25.
The Bruins went into the game planning to match the Eagles' intensity. However, the Bruins' offense is different and therefore more difficult to scout. "We don't run plays, we run concepts," Coach Uwarow said after his team continued their undefeated record at home this season.Â
Although the offense changes often, the players still work well together, according to Devin Dean. "I can trust my players to do what they need to do," Dean said in his post-game interview.
Next up, the Bruins will be back in action on their home court Friday the 24
th at 8 p.m. against the Johnson University (TN).
