Pair of Second-Half Goals Lifts Lady Bruins to 2-0 Win Over Barons

The Lady Bruins scored two goals in the second half as the team defeated Brewton-Parker College on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. With the win, the Bruins move back to .500 on the season at 3-3 after back to back wins.

"We knew it was going to be a tough match as it always is against Brewton-Parker," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "They played a great game. Our girls stepped up big and once we got things going things started to click. I think we are getting closer to where we need to be with our possession and combination play which is what we want."

The Bruins came into the match on the heels of a 1-0 victory over Carolina University last week. The Barons entered Saturday's game at 0-0-1 on the season. The two teams took the pitch as a steady rain presented challenging conditions for both teams.

In the opening minutes, both teams came out looking to gain possession despite the wet conditions. The Bruins were able to get a few looks early on as Kayle Stevenson and Jenna Bishop helped free Brinkley Adams for lanes to score.

The Barons came back with chances of their own and nearly netted the first goal on a broken play but Bruins' keeper Angelina Martin came up with a kick save to turn the ball aside. Both teams continued to advance to try to find the back of the net but the halftime buzzer sent both teams into the break tied at 0-0.

In the second half, the Bruins came out strong with good possession as the team was able to play in sync in moving the ball into the attacking third. It didn't take long for the Bruins to gain the lead as Brinkley Adams moved past two different defenders and fired a beautiful shot into the back of the net to put the Bruins up 1-0.

Despite gaining the lead, the Bruins continued to possess well and pressure the net. The Barons tried to fight back with the equalizer but the Bruins back line stood strong.

In the 80th minute, Mia Marks extended the Bruins lead with a rocket shot past the keeper as the Bruins led 2-0. From there, the Bruins were able to turn aside last-minute chances by the Barons as the team held on for a 2-0 win.

"We came out in the second half motivated to take care of the game," Coach Carmichael said. "Overall it was a great team effort for us tonight. The team is working hard in practice and it is showing in the games. Everyone did a great job."

The Bruins out shot the Barons 22-17 in the match while keeper Angelina Martin made 11 saves for the team. Mia Marks and Brinkley Adams each notched their third goal of the 2020 season as the Bruins picked up the win in their final home game of the season.

Next up, the team will be on the road October 17 as they face Martin Methodist College in East Ridge, Tennessee.
