Lady Bruins Compete in Intrasquad Scrimmage to Prepare for 2020 Season

The Lady Bruins volleyball team competed in an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday night in the Davis Field House. In the first three sets, the varsity team defeated the varsity reserve 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-10) before the team split up the squads for the final two sets.

"We're a very young team with a lot of new players," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "I thought our freshmen played well and played mature and we look forward to what they can add to our team this year."

In the opening set, sophomore Emma Riddle provided a spark as she went on a serving streak and propelled the royal blue team with great play at the net to help the royal take the first set 25-11. Faith Rahn made her Bruins debut in a big way particularly in the second set as her play helped the team jump out to an early lead to win 25-11. Victoria Glaze and Brooke Beaver provided kills for the royal team in the third set as the team built a 8-1 lead and never looked back winning the set 25-10.

For the final two sets, the Bruins coaching staff switched things up to allow for different combinations. In the fourth set, the freshmen faced off against the returners. Courtney Campbell provided several nice kills for the navy team as the set went back and forth throughout. Eventually, the royal were able to battle back thanks to kills from Victoria Glaze and Emma Riddle as the returners took set four 25-18.

In the fifth and final set, the freshmen were paired against one another where the set remained close. Bailee Hunger provided good play up front while Courtney Campbell came up with several additional kills. In the end, the set finished 15-10 in favor of the royal side as the night concluded.

"We were able to see some areas that we aren't quite ready to be playing a real match in," Coach Denny said. "I felt like our serving improved as the match went on but I feel like we are going to be working on our defense as we prepare for next week."

The Bruins will open the 2020 season next Friday night as they welcome region rival Toccoa Falls College to the Davis Field House. Tip-off for the match is set for 7 p.m.
