A fourth quarter surge by Brevard College was too much for the Bruins as they fell 48-57 up in North Carolina Tuesday night. Delaney Edwards led the Bruins on the night with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
"We were better today than we were last game. If we can keep saying that, we will be okay," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We had flashes of greatness and our defense worked really hard but then all too often we didn't reward ourselves by getting the rebound. They took 71 shots to our 48. No matter how hard we play, it is hard to win on the scoreboard when they get that many more shots than us. We gave up offensive rebounds and turned the ball over which led to easy buckets for them."
Tonight's game was the seventh time the two teams have met with the Bruins coming into today's game with a 2-2 record this season and the Tornados 1-1 on the year. As the game tipped off, Tamrah Konieczka would steal the ball giving Shea Dickinson the chance to make a three-point shot to start tonight's scoring. The Bruins would then go up by five points thanks to another three from Delaney Edwards and a layup from Tamrah Konieczka. The first quarter would end with the Bruins leading 15-12 over Brevard.
Right from the start of the second quarter, Bethany Daulton would sink a three-pointer to extend the lead for the Bruins. The Bruins would go on to score 15 points making 8 of their 9 free throws as the second quarter ended with the Bruins having a five point lead over the Tornados.
The Bruins maintained their lead through the third quarter as Annie Miller led the team with 6 points to give them the 41-35 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. As the final quarter got under way, a couple turnovers in the first few minutes would make way for Brevard College to close the gap. With under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bruins would lose their lead and found themselves chasing the Tornados. The Bruins tried to rally, but the fourth quarter hot streak by Brevard College was just too much for them to overcome. The Tornados scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to give them the 57-48 win.
"We held them to 29% shooting showing that we did things right defensively." said LeViere. Delaney Edwards led the team with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Teammate Gracen Ledford was right behind with 10 points and Tamrah Konieczka had 7 rebounds on the night.
Next up, the Bruins travel to Kentucky to take on Campbellsville-Harrodsburg for a Friday night game.
