The women's basketball team begins their 2021-22 season this Friday as they welcome Agnes Scott College to the Davis Field House. Their abbreviated 2020-21 season ended with a 6-9 record and the Bruins narrowly missing out on the NCCAA DII South Region Championship as they fell 68-72 against Pensacola Christian College.
"The team has been putting in some hard work, and we are excited to be on the court after starting practice on October 15," said Head Coach Mike LeViere.
The two sides have met twice before with the Bruins owning the 2-0 record and coming away with a dominant 71-43 victory on November 8, 2019. Agnes Scott struggled last season coming away winless in their 14 games.
This preseason, Coach LeViere has put a big emphasis on his team's defensive threat. "With 8 newcomers to the team, a lot of time and effort has gone into teaching the big picture in regards to our schemes," said LeViere. "As a coach, I feel like we need another 2-3 weeks of practice to be ready for that first game, as we have been focusing mainly on defense and changing our defensive scheme. We don't expect to be perfect come Friday night. We know it's just the beginning, but we do want to see improvement each and every day. We are going to work extremely hard, especially on defense, and we'll use the game to show areas where we need to improve and go from there. Overall I have been very happy with how the team has been working together and figuring things out."
"We'll have several players unavailable for a while as we have been hit with the injury bug, but with a solid group of upperclassmen returners, and some good energy from some newcomers, we are looking forward to getting out and competing this season."
The women's basketball team's home opener is Friday night with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
