The Bruins volleyball team earned the #1 seed for the NCCAA DII South Regional tournament as the team looks to win their sixth-straight region title. The Bruins enter the tournament at 26-5 including posting a perfect 8-0 record in region play this season.
"We have had a great season," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We started strong and stayed strong as the season progressed. We want to build on that success and finish stronger at regionals this week."
The region tournament will be played at Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia. The Bruins will play #4 Toccoa Falls College in the semifinal match at 7 p.m. on Friday. This will be the third matchup of the season between the two programs with the Bruins winning 3-0 in both previous matches.
On September 21, the Bruins were able to cruise to a 25-9 win in set one and kept up their momentum by defeating the Screaming Eagles 25-16 and 25-13 to win the match. Victoria Glaze and Kayla Oberstar each posted double-digit kills in the win.
The Bruins and Screaming Eagles would square off again on October 19 in Georgia. This match was much closer throughout but the Bruins were still able to edge TFC 25-19, 25-19 before pulling away with a 25-14 win in set three. Victoria Glaze led the Bruins with a double-double 10 kills and 12 digs in the win.
The Bruins enter the region semifinal on Friday having won 12 of their last 13 games. The team saw their winning streak snapped in the regular season finale as they fell to Carolina University 3-0.
Toccoa Falls enters the region semifinal at 7-17 on the season having lost six of their last seven. The Screaming Eagles have been led by Addison Walters and Lauren Eley as each has posted nearly 150 kills on the season.
"Our message to the team is to start strong, stay strong and finish strong," Coach Denny said. "We're looking forward to a great tournament."
In the other semifinal match, the #2 seeded Pensacola Christian College will face #3 Johnson University (FL). This season, the Eagles and Suns have met three times with PCC winning two of those three matches. The winner of both semifinal matches will meet in the region championship on Saturday at 11 a.m.
