The Bruins baseball team was on the road on Tuesday evening as the team fell in back to back games of a doubleheader at Milligan University in Johnson City, Tennessee. It was déjà vu for the Bruins as both games remained close until the fourth inning when the Buffs scored 4 runs en route to a 9-0 win in each game.
The Bruins came into Tuesday's games on the heels of a tough loss to Carolina University on Saturday. They knew they would be in for another tough test as they faced Milligan who came into the game at 14-9 on the season.
In game one, the Bruins turned to Ethan Rogers for the start as he finished pitching six innings while striking out two. Offensively, the Bruins just couldn't get the bats going as the team managed just one hit in the first game.
The Buffs pulled ahead in the bottom of the first after Anthony Guzman scored on a fielder's choice. The Buffs would add another run in the 3rd to make it 2-0 before distancing their lead with four runs in the 4th to make it 6-0. From there, the Bruins never recovered as the Buffs went on to win 9-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.
After a short break, the two teams were back on the field again for game two. Josh Crane got the start on the mound for the Bruins where he pitched 3 1/3 innings for BJU. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when the Buffs added two runs thanks to a double from Justin Greene and a single from Chancery Hall.
The Bruins tried to battle back, but each hit seemed to go right to a Buffs' fielder as the team continued to trail 2-0. In the 4th, the Buffs again used a big inning to extend their lead as a single from Robert Salcedo scored two runs and a pair of singles scored two more runs to make it 6-0.
In the 5th, the Bruins looked to mount a rally as Riley Ramsey singled and Conley Burk drew a walk to give the team baserunners. Unfortunately, both runners were left stranded as David Gonzalez lined out to end the inning.
The Buffs would add three more runs in the bottom of the 5th as they pushed their lead to 9-0. The Bruins again were able to get runners aboard, but the team couldn't drive them in as they were again shutout 9-0 in game two of the doubleheader.
"We want to thank all of our fans for their loyal support," Bruins Head Baseball Coach Brent Casteel said. "We're doing what we can to build this program the right way."
Next up, the Bruins will return home for a Saturday doubleheader as the team welcomes Johnson University (TN) to Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.
