The Bruins baseball team battled hard on Saturday afternoon but the team came up short in back to back region losses to Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia. With the two losses on the day, the Bruins fall to 0-7 to begin the season and 0-4 in region play.
"It's been a long weekend for us," Bruins Head Coach Brent Casteel said. "We're looking ahead to next week as we look to continue to improve."
The Bruins came into the game on the heels of a loss to Toccoa on Friday night. The Screaming Eagles scored five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 9-0 win over the Bruins. On Saturday, the two teams met again for a doubleheader to round out the weekend.
In the opening game, Henry Wallach was on the mound for the Bruins where he shutout the Screaming Eagles in the first and second inning. The Bruins took the lead in the 3rd as Isaiah Brandt scored off a fielder's choice from Riley Ramsey to put BJU up 1-0.
The Screaming Eagles came right back as a double by Noah Davis scored two to put TFC up 2-1. The two teams went back and forth with the score remaining close over the next two innings. In the 5th, the Screaming Eagles blew the game open as a two-run homerun by Jarred Jones and a three-run shot by Brandon Sewell put TFC up 7-1. From there, the Bruins couldn't recover as they finished the game with an 8-2 loss.
In the second game of the day, the Bruins struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Screaming Eagles responded as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first to lead 7-2. Over the next few innings, TFC continued to build on their lead eventually building a 15-2 advantage in the bottom of the 3rd.
Rommel Acosta started a rally for the Bruins in the fourth as the senior hit the first homerun in program history with a solo shot to make it 15-3. The Bruins would get two more in the inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Conley Burk as the team trailed 15-5. The Bruins continued to chip away at the lead, but in the end, the deficit was too much to overcome as the team fell 18-9 in game two.
Next up, the Bruins will be on the road on Tuesday as the team heads to Cleveland, Georgia, for a matchup with Truett-McConnell University.
