The Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the first, but a five-run sixth inning by Toccoa Falls was too much to overcome as the Screaming Eagles went on to defeat BJU 13-3 on Friday night at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.
The two teams met earlier in the season with Toccoa Falls sweeping the three game series in Georgia. The Bruins came into Friday's game on the heels of their first win in program history in a 5-3 victory over Johnson University (TN). Garrett Huskey would get the start for the Bruins as the team looked to capture a Friday night win.
The Bruins were aggressive at the plate as a single by Conley Burk started the offensive production before a single by Riley Ramsey and a double from Daniel Barcena helped the Bruins jump out to a 2-0 lead. Defensively, the Bruins stood strong while Garrett Huskey didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning of play.
As the two teams entered the top of the sixth, the Bruins led 2-1. The Screaming Eagles were able to get their bats going with three straight singles before a triple from Jarrod Jones scored a pair of runs to cap a five-run inning for TFC. As a result, the Bruins found themselves trailing 6-2.
From there, the Bruins tried to battle back but lacked consistency in their bats as short rallies were ended by the Screaming Eagles. Toccoa Falls would add a pair of runs again in the 8th inning before taking a 13-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Brandon Davis hoped to start a rally for the Bruins as he singled to left to begin the final inning. Riley Ramsey then drove home the run with an RBI single, but in the end the deficit was too much to overcome as the Bruins fell to Toccoa Falls 13-3.
Next up, the Bruins will be back in action on Saturday as the team plays a doubleheader against Toccoa Falls College in Greenville with the first game getting underway at 12:30 p.m.
