After going down a goal early in the game, the Bruins women's soccer team responded with a commanding six goals Tuesday afternoon in a 6-1 victory against Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
"We started out a bit sluggish and coughed up a quick goal but the team maintained their composure and got themselves back in the game and started creating a number of goal scoring opportunities," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "Once we got the first goal we were able to settle into the game and eventually get everybody into the match. Quite a few of our players that haven't played a lot of minutes really stepped up and collectively were able to possess and play a very attractive style of play and were rewarded with several goals."
The Royals got on the score sheet first putting one in the back of the net in the 2nd minute.
"I'm really proud of how resilient this team is," said midfielder Lauren Murray. "Going down 1-0 early can be difficult and sometimes teams make it more difficult for themselves by putting their heads down and thinking "it's already not looking good." Not this team, we went down early and we pulled together to get that equalizer quickly and it only went up from there."
Lauren Murray opened her 2021 scoring account equalizing the game just four minutes later with the assist by Korbyn Griffith. The Bruins would get another one in the 13th minute as Jenna Bishop assisted Brinkley Adams to give the Bruins the 2-1 lead.
The women's soccer team wasted no time putting another one in the back of the net as Jenna Bishop notched a goal in the 16th minute.
By the 34th minute it was already 4-1 Bruins as Anna Grace Abrams would have her chance to score off of the assist by Brinkley Adams.
The Bruins would go into the half leading 5-1 as Susie VanDoodewaard would get her first goal of the season courtesy of the assist by Emma Barter.
At the start of the second half, just three minutes in, Susie VanDoodewaard would notch her second goal of the game making the score 6-1.
"Regent worked hard and were able to create their own opportunities and did a great job trying to stay in the game," said Carmichael. "We are needing some quick recovery to get ready tomorrow and play a strong Mary Baldwin University team."
The Bruins will have a 3 hours drive to Staunton, Virginia for tomorrow afternoon's match against Mary Baldwin University at 3 p.m.
