The women's soccer team put in the work to get a 3-1 victory over Mary Baldwin University in their second game in as many days. They now sit 5-1-0 on the 2021 season.
"We showed determination and worked incredibly hard as a team today working together to get the 3-1 win in back to back games," said midfielder Gabriela Gonzalez. "As an individual and as a team we persevered and it paid off."
Less than 24 hours after their previous match, the Bruins came out of the gates hot. Right off the kickoff Mia Marks brought the ball down the field and got a shot that went just wide. Just a few minutes later, Brinkley Adams dribbled the ball down the far side of the field where she crossed the ball in front of the net giving Kayle Stevenson the chance knock it in and give the Bruins the 1-0 lead.
"We were able to quickly establish a rhythm of play and created some quick scoring opportunities and got on the board early and were able to keep the pressure on a very good Mary Baldwin team," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael.
The Bruins doubled their lead in the 14th minute after Mia Marks sent the ball sailing to Gabriela Gonzalez who shot the ball right past the keeper giving the midfielder her first goal of the season.
The Fighting Squirrels then cut the Bruins lead back to one after getting the ball past the Bruins keeper in the first half.
Halfway through the second half, Mia Marks scored a rocket from outside the box bringing the score to 3-1.
"Mary Baldwin was able to get back in control of some parts of the game and put us back on our heels but the girls did a great job once again showing great resilience and getting back into the game," said Carmichael. "Our defensive pressure was relentless and hats off to our back line for cleaning up a number of messy situations and building the attack out of the back under lots of pressure. We will now work on recovery and get ready for our match this Saturday."
The match ended with shots fairly even with Mary Baldwin ending the game with 15 and the Bruins at 14. Bruins goalkeeper Susanna Hutson would put in the work making eight saves on the day.
The work's not done for the women's soccer team. They travel to Danville, VA to take on Averett University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
