The Bruins go 3-for-3 this week as they come away with the 4-1 victory in their third road game of the week. With today's win, the Bruins have now won five straight matches and are off to one of the best starts in program history.
"The team did a phenomenal job, and I'm proud of the way they were able to solve several tactical challenges that presented themselves throughout the game due to constant pressure by Averett," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "They were able to overcome and break the pressure which created some fast counterattacks as as such we were able to take advantage of the space and create a number of scoring opportunities."
"I am especially proud of our players that we have now beat four teams that were either undefeated or had a winning record at the time we played them which is a huge shout out to the team for a job well done," said Carmichael.
The game remained knotted at zero for the the first 30 minutes of play until Mia Marks played the ball off of a rebound to strike first for the Bruins.
The Bruins got off to a hot start in the second half scoring two goals in the first six minutes. Mia Marks chipped the ball from the 12-yard line just over the Averett keeper in the 49th minute. Just three minutes later Gabriela Gonzalez would send the ball to Brinkley Adams who sent it right into the back of the net.
The Bruins were unable to keep their clean sheet as the Cougars got on the board with just 22 minutes remaining.
But the Bruins weren't finished scoring yet. Susie VanDoodewaard dribbled through the defense on a breakaway to find the back of the net to make it 4-1.
"Even though they were pressing hard, we were still tenacious up top and notched several great goals," said Captain Caroline Hartzler. "Averett came out pressing hard in the second half but we were able to defend well and absorb most of their attacks. Even after they got a goal we didn't let the momentum swing and responded well."
Coach Carmichael said that he was "able to get everybody some minutes in this hard earned win and time to recover and get ready for our match against Brevard next Wednesday."
The women's soccer team is now 6-1-0 on the season. They take on Brevard College next Wednesday.
