Bruins Sweep Lions 3-0

The Bruins volleyball team had a strong performance on Tuesday night as the team swept Piedmont College 3-0 to improve to 9-1 on the season. Victoria Glaze led the Bruins with 10 kills in the win while Timbre Cruz had four aces.

"I was really pleased with our effort tonight," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Different players stepped up for us at different times which helped us to get the win. We had a great serve tonight which completely took them out of their offense. We're seeing improvement with each match and I am pleased with where we are at this point in the season."

The Bruins came into the match on the heels of a four-game road trip last weekend in which the team picked up three wins. They returned home Tuesday night as they welcomed Piedmont University (NCAA D3) who came into the match at 0-7 on the year.

In the opening set, the Bruins came out with a strong serving attack as Katelyn Landkrohn helped the team jump out to a 10-2 lead. The Bruins continued to pick apart the Lions defense which forced them out of their rhythm. As a result, the Bruins continued to find kills as Emily Via and Kayla Oberstar pushed the lead to 22-9. Camila Silva ended the set for the Bruins with an ace as the team rolled to a 25-10 win in set one.

The Bruins again jumped out to an early lead thanks to back to back aces from Katelyn Landkrohn and Timbre Cruz. The Lions tried to recover but a kill from Emma Riddle pushed the lead to 13-7. The Lions chipped away at the lead before Victoria Glaze came up with a big kil to make it 21-12. Again, Camila Silva ended the set as the freshman made a kill to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win in set three.

Bruins fans were on their feet to begin set three as they hoped the hometown team would complete the sweep. Hannah Prince recorded back to back aces as the Bruins once again jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. The team continued to push the lead thanks to kills from Emma Riddle and Kayla Oberstar.

Near the midway point of the set, the Lions climbed back to trailed 19-14. Victoria Glaze then hammered home a kill to grab momentum back as the Bruins went on to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

"We're still working on our lineup but we've had some players really step in to key roles for us this season and we're hoping we can keep it going and get two wins coming up this weekend," Coach Denny said.

The Bruins had a combined 16 aces in the match which was a crucial stat in the win. Next up, the Bruins will be back home again on Friday night for a tri-match as they welcome Paine College at 4 p.m. and Erskine College at 8 p.m.
