Bruins Sweep Wildcats 3-0 for Road Win

The Bruins volleyball team was on the road on Tuesday night as the team swept Johnson & Wales University 3-0 in Charlotte, North Carolina. With the win, the Bruins have won eight of their last 10 matches and sit at 14-3 on the season.

"Johnson and Wales always brings a good match and tonight was no different," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Although we got off to a slow start, we finally got some momentum thanks to our freshmen."

The Bruins came into the match on the heels of back to back region wins in competition last week. The Wildcats entered the match at 8-4 on the season including winning two of their last three.

In the opening set, the Wildcats were able to take the early lead but the score remained close. Errors continued to plague the Bruins which resulted in points for JWU. The Bruins were able to find their way back into the game thanks to kills from Emily Via and Camila Silva as the team came back to take the lead and win set one 25-16.

The Wildcats looked to even the match in set two as again both teams went back and forth with several ties and lead changes. The Bruins again found ways to pull ahead thanks to pinpoint kills and good defensive play. As a result, the Bruins held off a late comeback by the Wildcats as BJU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win in the second set.

In set three, the Bruins came out looking to close out the match. The team got a spark from their blocking at the net as Emily Via and Emma Riddle made it difficult for the Wildcats to get into any consistent rhythm. As a result, the Bruins took the lead and continued to keep it throughout the midway point of the set. The Wildcats tried to mount one last effort but captain Victoria Glaze served an ace to complete the sweep as the Bruins won 25-17 in set three and the match 3-0.

"Johnson kept chipping away at our lead and pushed us all the way to the end," Coach Denny said. "We were able to have different people contribute for us at different times and we're thankful to be heading back home with a win."

Victoria Glaze led the Bruins with 13 kills in the match while Rachel Pattisall had a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs. With the win, the Bruins now have won seven straight over Johnson & Wales University.

Next up, the Bruins will return home on Thursday night as the team welcomes Pfeiffer University to the Davis Field House.
