Tuesday night's home opener for the women's soccer team saw a total of eight goals resulting in the Bruins 5-3 victory over Columbia International University. With tonight's win the Bruins are now 2-1-0 on the season.
"We knew we had to score some goals tonight," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. And score goals they did.
The CIU Rams got on the board first just three minutes into the game. According to forward Mia Marks, the Bruins offense knew it was necessary to "keep our heads up and keep it simple."
The Bruins quickly responded with Brinkley Adams keeping the ball in play at the end line where she turned and passed to the middle where Kayle Stevenson was in perfect position to put the ball into the back of the net.Â
Mia Marks would make her move in the 15 minute mark dribbling around the defenders outside of the box and shooting it with her left foot right through the gloves of Rams goalkeeper Kayla Lusk giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead.Â
Not to be outdone, Brinkley Adams sailed one from outside of the box over the heads of the Rams defenders and goalkeeper to further extend the lead for the Bruins in the 24th minute.
The Rams were able to get one back in the 34th minute making the score 3-2 at halftime.Â
Going into the second half Coach Carmichael said that "the big thing for us was making sure that we dominated the midfield and kept the ball moving. We got a lot more opportunities when we kept the ball at our feet and kept the speed of play up high and just keep probing, and I think the girls responded well to that."
Brinkley Adams would go to score her second goal of the game after a give and go from teammate Anna Grace Abrams. She worked it all the way to the goal and there was nothing Rams keeper Kayla Lusk could do to stop her.Â
After a foul in the box, the Rams were awarded a penalty kick where they converted it to make it a one goal game once again. But the Bruins weren't done yet. With under 10 minutes remaining, Gabriela Gonzalez sent a long ball up the field where Marks was there to dribble around the keeper to score the insurance goal for the Bruins.
With tonight's 5-3 result, the Bruins are now 2-1-0 on the season and look ahead to their next match on Friday where they will welcome Oglethorpe University to Alumni Stadium for a 6pm match.
