A brace by Mario Figueroa sealed the win for the Bruins men's soccer team in Wednesday's road match against Brewton-Parker College.
"I am extremely proud of my boys," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "We held strong and fought adversity and injuries to beat a solid NAIA team. Our team is continuing to build, and we are working hard to learn from our mistakes."
The game started with both sides seeing several good looks to get on the board, but in the 28th minute the Barons shot a long ball on frame causing Bruins goalkeeper Chris Monczewski to go down he reached to make the save. Zach Burk subbed in to mind the net for the Bruins.
In the 33rd minute, Gasheed Lareche crossed the ball towards the far end line where Peter Waddy was able keep it in bounds. Waddy passed the ball back to Charly Gualajara who sailed over towards Mario Figueroa. Figueroa was able to settle the ball before turning and sending it into the back of the net to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins and Barons continued to battle and goalkeeper Zach Burk had to make several saves to keep the Bruins lead alive. Coach Fulton said that he was "proud of Zach for stepping up when the team needed him."
Nearing the end of the match in the 79th minute, the Barons were able to sail one over to the far side of the net to even the score. But that didn't stop the Bruins. Just six minutes later, Mario Figueroa would steal the ball off of a bad pass from the Barons to go one on one with the keeper and score the game winner for the Bruins.
Figueroa now leads the team with two goals on the season. The Bruins and Barons ended the game with 13 shots a piece and goalkeeper Zach Burk made five saves for the Bruins.
"It's now time to recover and focus on our next game," said Fulton.
With tonight's victory, the Bruins are now 2-0-1 as they look to their next game this Saturday night at Alumni Stadium where they'll take on new opponent Converse College.
