Winning Streak Reaches Five as Bruins Defeat Tornados 3-1

The Bruins volleyball team remained undefeated to start the 2021 season as the team defeated Brevard College 3-1 on Wednesday night in Brevard, North Carolina. Victoria Glaze had a monster game for the Bruins with 19 kills while the Emily Via finished with 11 in the win.

"We started out strong in the first set which really helped us for the match," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Our freshmen showed a lot of maturity tonight and they made some key plays in the 3rd and 4th sets which gave us a lot of momentum to close it out."

The Bruins came into the match after an impressive debut in the Labor Day Tournament last weekend in which the team captured four wins in two days. The Tornados came into the match at 1-4 on the season including suffering a 3-0 sweep against Pfeiffer University on Tuesday.

In the opening set, the Bruins jumped out to an early lead thanks to great serving from Hannah Prince. The team was in sync early on as assists from Prince turned into kills from Victoria Glaze and Emily Via. As a result, the Bruins never looked back as they cruised to a 25-11 win in set one.

The Tornados came roaring back in set two thanks to Ashley Hoxit and Kaitlyn Pressley as the pair picked apart the Bruins defense with kills. The Bruins were able to keep the score close, but a key run by Brevard extended their lead as they went on to even the set at 1-1.

In the third set, the two teams went back and forth with the score remaining close throughout the set. The Bruins were able to again rely on the kills of Victoria Glaze, but freshmen Emily Via and Camila Silva each made key plays for the Bruins as the team was able to edge the Tornados 25-21 in set three to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Bruins came out strong in the fourth set as they looked to put the match away. The Bruins built an early 8-3 lead and continued to maintain the upper hand thanks to kills from Glaze and Silva. It looked as though the Bruins would run away with the set, but the Tornados made a big run to try to force a fifth set. The Bruins wouldn't be denied as Katelyn Landkrohn served an ace to win it 25-21 for the Bruins as the team defeated Brevard College 3-1.

While the Bruins rode the kills of Victoria Glaze and Emily Via, Hannah Prince had an incredible match with 31 assists while Katelyn Landkrohn led the way with 17 digs in the win. Next up, the Bruins will play a two-day tournament this weekend in Lakeland, Florida, with four matches on deck for the team.

On Friday, the Bruins will face Trinity Baptist College at 2 p.m. in their first NCCAA DII South Region matchup of the season before facing Southeastern University at 4 p.m.
