Bruins Drop Road Contest to Begin Second Half of the Season

The Bruins basketball team suffered a tough loss to begin the second half of the season as the team fell to Webber International University 75-59 on Tuesday night in Babson Park, Florida. Three players scored in double figures for the Bruins but it wasn't enough as the team falls to 4-7 on the season.

"This was a tough first game for us against a good team," Bruins Head Men's Basketball Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Unfortunately, injuries limited some of our players tonight and we just weren't able to make the plays we needed to."

The Bruins came into the game on the heels of back to back wins to round out the first semester of play. The team was looking to keep up their winning ways as they faced Webber who came into the game at 5-10 having lost three of their last four games.

From the opening tip, the Bruins and Warriors traded baskets before Mark Dickerson and Eli Cupples both knocked down threes as BJU trailed 9-8. The Warriors began to pull away but the Bruins answered right back as another bucket from Cupples helped the Bruins trail 20-17 near the midway point of the first half.

The Bruins stayed within striking distance but the Warriors maintained the upper hand as the first half came to a close. The Bruins battled back to tie the game at 29-29 but the Warriors responded with a 7-0 run to close out the half leading 36-29.

In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to claw their way back into the game. Henry Blair and Eli Cupples each hit shots early in the half, but the Warriors again answered the Bruins shot for shot to keep the lead.

Later on in the half, Daniel Fuller made a layup before knocking down a three as the Bruins trailed 44-42. The Warriors came right back as Eddie Davis made a three to spark a short run.

With just over eight minutes to play, Hayes Brush knocked down a three as the Bruins looked to mount one last rally to get back into the game. Instead, the Warriors went on a run as they stretched their lead to double digits and never looked back as they handed the Bruins a 75-59 loss.

"We play an even stronger opponent on Thursday," Coach Uwarow said. "Some guys who have wanted an opportunity will get that during this Florida trip. This is their chance to gain some experience and increase our depth."

Henry Blair led the Bruins with 16 points and 5 rebounds in the game while Hayes Brush finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds and Eli Cupples had 12 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The Bruins struggled at times offensively as the team shot just 33% from the field and 19% from three-point range.

Next up, the Bruins will be on the road again on Thursday as the team faces Keiser University in Babson Park, Florida.
