Women's XC Team Races Well in a Competitive Field in Georgia

After two weeks off of competition, the Bruins cross country teams made the trip down to Fairburn, Georgia to compete in the Asics Invitational hosted by Clayton State University.

"It was a very good race for the women's team today," said Head Coach Ken Roach. "They raced in a very competitive field and showed up in a big way. They continue to drop their cumulative time each race and only had a 43 second split in the scoring spots today."

Today's 5,000 meter run saw the Bruins compete against a strong field of competition, including Georgia Tech, Wofford College, Carson-Newman and Emory.

From the gun, the Bruins looked for a strong race, and the team was able to work together to see a solid finish.

Joanna Lain would see the finish line first for the women's team as she crossed with a time of 20:25.70, a 10 second personal best. Also finishing with a new PR was Joy Hast. Crossing the finish line right behind Hast was teammate Sarah Alferink. Rounding out the top-five was Liesl Heinz and Margaret Snyder who finished one second a part.

The women's team saw improvement from their last race as they knocked close to a minute off of their total team time ending with a time of 1:43:53.29 averaging 20:46.67 in the 5k. They finished just half a second behind Piedmont University to place sixth out of 11 teams.

"This team works with each other so well during races and that unity continues to improve," said Roach. "We still have strength going into the October racing season and we're excited to get to the next meet."

The Bruins are back on the course October 14 as they travel to Salem, Virginia to compete at the Roanoke XC Invite.
