In a tough match Saturday night in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the Bob Jones University men's soccer team saw their nine-game winning streak snapped by Converse University with a 1-0 loss.
"We want to start by giving God the glory," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "It is never fun to lose a match, especially one where we had moments to take control. Ultimately we have lessons to learn, and I am thankful we have the opportunity to grow as we enter our final match and post season. The details were the difference maker tonight and we will take a look back and learn. With that being said, I am extremely proud of the way we battled. Our boys never stopped pushing to win the game against a very tough Division II conference champion. These are great games to sharpen our minds for the post season which is always unpredictable. Soli deo Gloria."
In only their second meeting, the Bruins and Valkyries came in with impressive season records. The Bruins made the trip to Spartanburg, South Carolina looking to keep their nine-game winning streak alive. Their last match saw them victorious over Trinity Baptist College to improve to a 9-3-1 overall this season. In their final game of the season, Converse University entered the match undefeated at home with a 10-1-4 record.Â
It was a solid start as the game got underway, but 18 minutes into the match, Converse University broke the deadlock and scored to give them the 1-0 advantage.Â
With under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, the Bruins would see one of their best chances of the half as Ian Arendse slid the ball forward to Rylan Boldt who shot the ball towards the goal, but the Converse keeper got a piece of it sending it just to the outside of the net giving the Bruins a chance to set up a corner kick.Â
In the second half, the Bruins kept fighting for the equalizer, but as the final whistle blew it was Converse University who came away with the 1-0 win.Â
Converse University outshot the Bruins eight to four. Peter Waddy and Matthias Baladi each recorded shots on goal in the second half for the Bruins with Rylan Boldt and Conley Burk each having a look at the net throughout the game.
The Bruins are now 9-4-1 on the season as they look ahead to their next match against Shaw University on Wednesday afternoon before preparing for the post-season.
