The men's soccer team won tonight's battle of the Bruins as Bob Jones University scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Carolina University Bruins 4-1 from Alumni Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina. With tonight's win, the Bruins have extended their five-game win streak to improve to 5-3-1 on the season.
"Tonight was the highlight of this home stretch," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "Carolina is a team that has been beating good teams and we knew this game was going to be tough. This week is massive, but tonight was huge. I told our team to celebrate tonight, tomorrow we go back to work. It was good to have a collective team win"
Coming into tonight's match, the BJU squad knew they would be up against a tough team as Carolina University came into the game 7-1 on the season, picking up their first loss of the season last week. The BJU Bruins entered the game on a four-game hot streak as they picked up a win on Saturday against region rivals Pensacola Christian College. The two Bruins last met in 2020 where Carolina University shutout Bob Jones 2-0 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.Â
As the game got underway, the CU Bruins pressured early and saw several good looks minutes into the match. Coming off of a corner kick in the 13th minute, Joe Reynolds was able to capitalize in front of the net and gain the early lead for Carolina University.
Just a few minutes later, the Bruins would answer as Peter Waddy sailed the ball up the field where Conley Burk collected the ball, sent it through the legs of a defender, and sent it right past the Carolina goalkeeper to level the score at one goal a piece.Â
Both teams were hungry for more, but as the first half came to a close the score would still be tied 1-1.Â
It was impressive second half for the BJU Bruins as they came out strong and notched three goals in under 10 minutes.
In the 66th minute, super sub Rylan Boldt came off the bench to score his fifth goal of the season as Peter Waddy once again chipped the ball forward for Boldt to go one on one with the Carolina goalkeeper.Â
Just five minutes later, Mario Figueroa danced around a defender and sailed the ball from outside the box for a beautiful goal to increase the lead for the home team.Â
With just over 15 minutes remaining in the match, Gasheed Lareche sent the ball on frame from the goal line. As Carolina's keeper deflected the first shot, James McCarty was waiting and tapped the ball in to earn his first goal of the season.Â
As the final whistle blew, the Bob Jones University Bruins held on to the 4-1 lead to hand Carolina University their second consecutive loss of the season.Â
"The team found the space and used the ball to be dangerous." said Fulton "We have four games in seven days and it is a lot. We need the mindset to attack and win the next game and then recover. Our team collectively is really coming together and it's exciting to see."
Up next, the men's soccer team will travel to Asheville, North Carolina to face Warren Wilson College before coming back home for Homecoming at Alumni Stadium Saturday night.Â
