The women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 72-69 victory over Pfeiffer University Tuesday evening in Misenheimer, North Carolina. With today's win, the Bruins have improved to 1-3 on the season.
"It was great for the team to get their first win," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "It was a grind and in no way are we satisfied with our performance but it was a gritty performance in the face of adversity. We still have a lot to improve on so we will celebrate a win and be thankful for that and then go to work on learning from our mistakes and improving for the future."
The Bruins entered today's game 0-3 after falling to Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday. Pfeiffer University came into the game 1-1 after picking up a decisive win over Agnes Scott College over the weekend. Today marked the first meeting between the Bruins and Falcons.
Tamrah Konieczka opened up the game by sinking a three-pointer. The Bruins went on to see a 7-0 lead over the Falcons. The Bruins held on to the lead until the last minute and a half after a three-pointer from the Falcons. As the first quarter finished, both teams continued to battle but it was the Falcons who held on to the 20-15 lead.
The back and forth effort continued throughout the second quarter, and the Bruins were able to regain and take the 30-27 lead at halftime. As the game continued, the Bruins continued with a well-rounded attack. In the defensive zone, Bethany Daulton was able to handle the defensive pressure well. Through a team effort and some key buckets down the stretch from Tamrah Konieczka, the Bruins were able to pull out the 72-69 win.
Four Bruins scored in the double figures tonight with Shea Dickinson leading the pack with a double double earning 16 rebounds and 13 points.
Up next, the Bruins are back at the Davis Field House to open their home campaign Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
