Chargers Edge Bruins 82-80 in South Region Matchup

The Bruins basketball team suffered a tough road loss on Friday night as the team fell to Southeastern Baptist College 82-80 in Laurel, Mississippi. The Bruins had five players score in double figures but the team couldn't find a way to capture the win as the team falls to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in region play.

"This is Southeastern's tenth game of the season already and only our second and that showed at points tonight," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "I am proud of how we responded after getting down early and then battling back. These are the games that will help us later in the season and I am excited to see how we respond."

The Bruins came into the matchup on the heels of a season-opening win over Brevard College on November 10. The Chargers came into Friday's game at 1-8 on the season and were following a loss to William Carey University earlier this week.

In the opening minutes, both teams went back and forth with each trying to establish the upper hand. The Bruins had trouble slowing Chargers' guard Jared Naylor as he hit four threes in the first half to give SBC the lead.

The Bruins got a spark from Kenney Garrick as the junior finished with 10 points in the first half. Still, the Bruins found themselves trailing 44-31 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Bruins looked to shake off their first half struggles and cut into the lead. Henry Blair was able to come up with some key baskets for the team and defensively the Bruins were able to force tough looks and then eliminate second chance opportunities.

In the late stages of the game, the Bruins had battled all the way back and were within striking distance. Unfortunately, the Chargers were able to make key baskets down the stretch as they went on to edge the Bruins 82-80.

Henry Blair led the way for the Bruins with 18 points while Hayes Brush finished with 12, Stephan Hugley with 11 and Trevor Brunson and Kenney Garrick each with 10. The Bruins outscored the Chargers 49-38 in the second half but in the end the deficit was too much to overcome as the team dropped their first region loss of the season.

Next up, the Bruins will get a chance to avenge tonight's loss as the team will once again face Southeastern Baptist on Saturday in Laurel, Mississippi. Tip-off for the matchup is set for 1 p.m.
